Building a Greener Destiny

America's first eco-sustainable city

The city will be a forward-thinking community operating with minimal impact on the environment and a hub where the latest clean technology innovations will emerge.

"We urgently need to reduce carbon emissions and cities like Destiny can show how a low carbon lifestyle can be attractive and good for the economy," said Peter R. Head, Director of Arup who are a partner in the scheme. "Destiny can point the way for the US to achieve an 80 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. This will be through a combination of renewable energy and focus on low carbon public transport for journeys to work and school."

Destiny’s boundary is marked by 64 square miles, but its footprint is much smaller, with a compact design and a focus on preservation. Utilising only previously disturbed land, the project will preserve thousands of acres of land, protecting the space from development forever.

The idea of creating a sustainable, self-contained urban center outside of existing city borders was developed and adopted in the Central Florida Regional Growth Vision. The consortium of organisations identified areas in the Central Florida area where independent, self-sustaining urban cores could be created to halt continued sprawl from existing cities.
