The Energy Independence Park at Destiny

Dominion Development Partners and Destiny are partnering to implement a new concept in industrial parks. The Park develops and deploys renewable and alternative energy technologies to assist in reducing our nation’s dependency on fossil fuels, while generating thousands of clean technology jobs.
Based on a sustainable business model that provides economic advantages, the Park creates a profitable business model with a self-funding research and development platform for emerging technologies. This self funding mechanism will feed the emerging companies at an Incubator Hub which will be an attractor for investment and other companies.
The Energy Independence Park at Destiny incorporates industrial symbiosis with economic benefits. The symbiosis creates synergies through the co-location of clean technology manufacturing operations, so that the output of one company’s process provides the input for another. Companies within the Park will share resources and distribution channels, providing cost savings and efficiencies. Also included in the mix are bio-fuel companies and others seeking a supportive environment to develop, demonstrate, and commercially deploy new alternative energy technology.
There are three elements to the project:
-
The Eco-Industrial Park will be home to medium to heavy industrial tenants. These
heavy power users, solar manufacturers, for instance, will see a significant savings in start-up costs by gathering compatible alternative energy companies in order to share the traditionally high cost of permitting and infrastructure. This results in lower initial costs for each tenant in the park. The synergy between companies and processes within the park also creates lower operating costs. For example, the off-take product and by-products (synthesis gas, heat, process steam, inexpensive electricity, ethanol, glycerin, distiller’s grains, etc.) of one technology can be the “feedstock” of another. This closed loop approach with the close proximity of plants reduces transportation and supply costs.
The Power Island provides additional benefits to tenants of The Energy Independence Park at Destiny. Utilizing advanced technology, biomass and other renewable feed stocks, the Power Island provides inexpensive renewable energy to the Eco-Industrial Park tenants. Here at the Power Island, a tapestry of processes will be deployed including: ethanol, biofuels, renewable diesel, gasification and waste-to-energy technologies that build the bridge away from fossil fuel dependency.
The Academic Village and R&D Campus is the nerve center of The Energy Independence Park at Destiny. The campus provides a venue for government, universities and non-profit organizations to partner with for-profit companies to advance the state of energy technology while producing the alternative fuels and renewable energy needed for energy independence. One of the most important functions of the Academic Village is the focus on training and certification for the new Clean Tech jobs that will be created at Destiny. The Village will also have a mix of permanent and temporary housing, along with a hotel, conference and training center.
